To those who care,
Thoughts for the day: Lesson 1

This is Liam writing. To start it all, I’ll have to go back to that day we met. That day it was raining in the sun. Golden rays pierced through the thin dark clouds as it guided the falling rain to the ground. Far ahead there was a rainbow. Various straight lines formed by the shadows of the clouds could be seen standing resolute as if a pillar to support the weight of the sky.

The lecturer in front was teaching about the subject you were most interested in – “parallel lines”. We were just seventeen that year, still clueless on life, wandering from place to place. Lectures were never taken in seriously. At least, not by most of us in the lecture. That day you entered our group of students, as a new exchange kid. We thought we’d have an introduction session and able to skip the lecture, but apparently, you were just asked to sit at your place in front.

The class was curious. Introduction session was always carried out. The lecturer instead introduced you briefly as you walked towards your seat.

“This is Laine. She has just enrolled in here and I hope all of you can give her your warmest welcome. Now, back to the topic…”

And he went on with his boring lecture. You listened to him intently as soon as you got to your seat. Never had you set down your attention and diverted it to those around you. You did not talk to those beside you. I had to admit, for a beauty like you, you seem to be a nerd! I felt my friend, John, brush me by the side.

“Eh, long black hair, nice slim body, cute face, not bad! Too bad she’s a nerd. You think she has a mate?”

I merely shook my head as I continued to gaze at you. Who are you? Then suddenly, you turned your head backwards and looked at me. I was surprised! Then, you smiled. I did not know why, but my heart began beating faster, and I in turn smiled back at you. That was probably the most embarrassing thing I’ve done. The next thing I knew, I found a duster in my face.

“Liam! I asked you to concentrate studying and there you are staring at our new student. How shameless! After class come with me for your detention!” the lecturer in front shouted out.

The rain stopped after the class ended. I followed the lecturer out. From the corner of my eyes, I saw your gaze following me as I exit the room. Detention was not that harsh. It was merely an extra long essay to be written and to be handed in the same day. Writing is my passion! There was just one complication, what could I write about parallel lines?

And so I headed to the library. I took a few books on math and sat down. I held my pen upright, but it only hovered there. My head was blank about what to write. I flipped through pages and pages of the books I took. It was not much of a help. I leaned back and let my mind wander momentarily.

I was walking down a street at night, at a swifter pace than normal. I felt short. I was holding my mother’s hand. We moved quickly till we came to a door. It was a weirdly shaped door. Oval in shape, gold frames around. The doorknob was shaped as the head of a lion. It had a creepy pair of eyes, which gave a feeling that it was alive. Mother knocked on the door with a certain beat and it squeaked open. An elderly man opened the door. He greeted us warmly. We entered the house and into a big room. There were quite a few people gathered there. They all looked up at us.

My dream was interrupted at that point as I felt a tuck at the shoulder. I opened my eyes slowly to allow my vision to get used to the light in the library. I saw your face in front of mine, only, upside down. I got a fright and jumped. Our foreheads knocked. You lifted your hand to your forehead and quickly walked away. I looked at you as you left the library. In front of me, I found a new stack of papers and on the papers a short note.

“Hi Liam,
You were pretty funny back there in class. I’m sorry to get you into trouble. Here is a brief note on what there is to write for your extra assignment. Nice to meet you. Hope you will finish it quick and not end up in a second detention! The rain today is nice, don’t you think? Hehe... Well, I’ll end here. See you! =P
Laine”

With your help, I managed to complete my assignment. And believe me, I loved that scenery of the rain this morning. It was beautiful. After handing it in, I left for the main gate. I saw you around the main gate alone. I approached you then.

“Hey, Laine! Thanks for your papers. Here, the papers you lent me,” I said as I handed to you your papers.

You took them with both hands and smiled at me. That smile… it was really sweet. You bowed a bit and left without saying another word. I stood there and looked at you walk down the street.

“You could at least say something,” I told myself as I turned around and moved back home.
